2021 Volkswagen ID.4 Vs 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E

2021 Volkswagen ID.4 Vs 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E

With the future of mobility having shifted towards electric cars, German automaker Volkswagen (VW) has announced its plan for multiple models within a few years. It is using the ID moniker for such vehicles, the first of which is the 2021 VW ID.4, a compact crossover. On the other hand, American manufacturer Ford has moved away from its bevy of sedans and has turned towards SUVs. The 2021 Mustang Mach-E brings the company at par with other manufacturers in the US market.

Points to Compare:

1) External Appearance- ID.4 seems to sport a more traditional appearance from the front as compared to the bold design on the Mach-E. Instead of the blue Ford logo, buyers will notice the pony, which indicates how much importance Ford gives to the Mustang brand, where the Mustang is a ‘muscular pony car’. Compared to this, a simple and blue VW logo is present on the ID.4. The hood line on the ID.4 is slightly higher than that on the Mach-E. Interestingly, it’s the Ford that comes with trunk space at the front and not the ID.4.

Full LED headlights are also standard on both, although they look more conventional on the VW. The ID.4 is smaller than the Mach-E in length. The rear end is clearly sleeker and sexier for the Mach-E, especially the sequential LED taillights.

2) Cargo Capacity- The ID.4 is the boxier vehicle of these two and offers only a little more cargo space than the Mach-E. 30.3 cubic feet is available on the former, as compared to 29.7 cubic feet on the latter. Taller people can sit comfortably at the rears of both vehicles.

3) Braking Performance- One dynamic factor that does not favor Volkswagen is braking performance. Any person driving the two cars will find the Mustang’s braking performance to be better. The Mach-E’s have a much more natural feel about them, and they are able to execute stoppages smoothly and confidently. In comparison, while bringing the ID.4 down from high speeds, the pedal feels strangely mushy and inconsistent, which is a common complaint among EVs (Electric Vehicles) that combine regenerative braking from the e-motor with mechanical brake mechanisms at the wheel.

4) Ground Clearance- Ground clearance on the 2021 VW ID.4 (8.2 inches) is significantly more than what is available for the 2021 Mustang Mach-E (5.7 inches).

5) Engine Options- All 2021 Mustang Mach-E cars come standard with RWD (Rear Wheel Drive), while AWD (All Wheel Drive) is also available. The electric engine can produce 266 hp of power and 317 lb-ft of torque when combined with a single-speed automatic transmission. For an electric vehicle, the 0-60 time is 3.5 seconds, which is impressive. The 2021 VW ID4’s single electric motor, along with the battery, produces 201 hp and 229 lb-ft. Power is raised to 302 hp when two electric motors are used. In terms of acceleration, the ID.4 is an entire second slower to the Mach-E while running from 0-60 mph.

6) Fuel Efficiency- There’s not much to choose from in terms of fuel efficiency here. Expect the ID.4 to be at 104/89/97 MPGe as opposed to the Mach- E with 108/94/101. (City/Highway/Combined).

Although the ID.4 does appear to be a more refined vehicle, the Mach-E is perfectly suited to be driven every day.
